Agfa, Silver Gelatin Paper
Hand-signed by the artist and numbered according to edition.
In White Champion – Lily, 1989, Mark Arbeit photographs two nude figures, one light-skinned and one dark-skinned, arranged in a closely intertwined pose. Their bodies overlap and curve around one another, forming a compact composition in which individual outlines become difficult to separate.
Part of Arbeit’s In and Out of Focus series, the photograph uses deliberate softness to shift attention from identity toward shape, movement, and tonal contrast. The pale and dark bodies create an almost abstract pattern, while the figures’ physical closeness brings intimacy and tenderness to the image. Through blur, Arbeit leaves their relationship unresolved, allowing the scene to move between human connection and pure visual form.
