Photographed in Venice in 1989 during a fashion shoot for Christian Lacroix, Mark Arbeit’s Venice - Saint Marco brings fashion, architecture, religion, and everyday life into a single striking frame.
A model dressed in Christian Lacroix crosses Piazza San Marco with quiet confidence. To her left, a group of nuns turns to look at her, creating an unforgettable juxtaposition between the theatrical expression of haute couture and the restraint of religious dress. Their glances introduce humour, curiosity, and an unscripted human moment into the carefully composed fashion image.
Venice provides more than a backdrop. The historic façades, open square, pigeons, and passing figures give the photograph a strong sense of place and time. Arbeit captures a rare moment in which fashion photography meets street photography, producing an image filled with elegance, contrast, and wit.
