In Overhead Lying in Sand, circa 1994, Tony Potts photographs a woman resting on the beach from directly above. Her face falls entirely outside the frame, leaving her identity unknown and directing attention toward the shape and physical presence of her body.

Her folded limbs create an unusual, almost abstract composition. Sand clings to her skin, softening its surface and connecting her figure to the surrounding ground. Light moves across the curves of her body, bringing contrast and depth to the black-and-white image.

Through its close cropping and overhead perspective, the photograph sits between figurative study and abstraction. The woman becomes part of the landscape, shaped by sunlight, shadow, and sand.
