"Strength personified."
Printed on Ilford Galerie Smooth Cotton Rag 310gsm
In Olukemi Amala, Rob presents an intimate portrait of his sister, transforming a familiar face into a broader meditation on identity, heritage and strength.
The work carries the visual language of Omodiagbe’s Nigerian background. Geometric patterns, repeated lines and decorative symbols surround and inhabit the figure, recalling the rhythms and graphic traditions found across African textiles, ornament and visual storytelling. Rather than treating pattern as decoration, Omodiagbe integrates it into the portrait itself. Culture becomes part of the sister’s identity.
Her face is reduced to bold, almost architectural forms. A dark heart, a golden circle and the dense network of marks across her forehead introduce a personal symbolic vocabulary, while the restrained palette gives the work a striking presence.
Omodiagbe described the portrait simply as “Strength Personified.” Painted as a portrait of his sister, Olukemi Amala feels both deeply personal and universal, honouring a woman whose strength is expressed through composure, heritage and presence rather than conventional portraiture.
