Photographed for Vogue in 2006, Sam Haskins’ portrait of Nicole Kidman brings together two unmistakable presences: one of cinema’s most celebrated actresses and one of the great innovators of twentieth-century fashion photography.

Seated barefoot in a worn armchair, Kidman appears at once composed and completely at ease. The elegance of her pose is offset by the raw simplicity of the setting, while Haskins’ characteristic use of black and white strips the image back to its essential elements - line, form, light and personality.

There is an intriguing duality to the portrait. Kidman’s elongated silhouette and couture styling evoke the sophistication of a traditional fashion editorial, yet her bare feet, relaxed posture and directness give the photograph an unexpected intimacy. Rather than simply photographing a Hollywood star, Haskins creates a study of femininity that feels confident, sensual and remarkably unguarded.

Created more than four decades after Haskins revolutionised photographic publishing with Cowboy Kate & Other Stories, the work demonstrates the enduring strength of his visual language. His fascination with the female form, graphic composition and the space between fashion and fine art remained as distinctive in the 2000s as it had been in the 1960s.

Nicole Kidman for Vogue is a sophisticated example of Haskins’ later work — timeless, understated and unmistakably his.

Haskins did all his printing for his creative work with a handful of exceptions. He also passed away (2009) with only 2.5% of his archive signed. The Haskins Archive is characterised by a broad creative range, including many iconic works. Still, there is only a very small number of silver gelatin prints for each image (typically 1-3 copies, sometimes a few more), so signed works are especially rare. Sam Haskins built his reputation on his legendary books, which meant he originally printed to make maquettes (4 for each 60’s title) for presentation to publishers, not to produce stock for the print market. In other words, Sam Haskins silver gelatine are organically hyper-limited, there are no ‘editions’ of his vintage black and white work.
