In this striking black-and-white photograph, Mark Arbeit brings fashion into dialogue with sculpture, architecture and the human form. Photographed at the Musée Bourdelle in Paris in 1993, the composition places the model atop Antoine Bourdelle’s monumental horse, creating an unexpected encounter between the stillness and weight of sculpture and the elegance of the posed figure.

Shot from above, Arbeit uses perspective to heighten the horse’s imposing scale. The model appears almost integrated into the sculpture, yet her bare skin, patterned garment and poised gesture create a sharp contrast with its weathered surface. The broad-brimmed hat resting beside her adds another graphic form to the composition.

The surrounding courtyard and sculptures remain visible, firmly locating the photograph within Bourdelle’s artistic environment. Arbeit transforms the museum from a backdrop into an active part of the image. Fashion, photography and sculpture occupy the same space, each shaping how the other is seen.
