In Anthurium Beauty, Mark Arbeit transforms the conventions of the beauty portrait through an unexpected encounter between the female face and the sculptural form of an anthurium.

The flower dominates the foreground in precise focus, its broad, veined surface and luminous spadix rendered with striking clarity. Behind it, the woman’s face recedes into softness. Rather than functioning as a decorative element, the anthurium becomes the principal subject, partially concealing the sitter and creating an intriguing dialogue between botanical and human beauty.

The photograph belongs to Arbeit’s In and Out of Focus series, begun after his move to Paris in 1985. Throughout the series, Arbeit deliberately reverses the traditional hierarchy of the portrait. Flowers occupy the plane of sharpest focus, while the human figure behind them dissolves into blur, shifting attention toward shape, texture and perception.

In Anthurium Beauty, this interplay feels especially elegant. The sweeping curve of the flower echoes the contours of the woman’s face, while the monochrome palette brings skin, leaf and light into a single visual language.
