In Anthurium Hat, 1987, Mark Arbeit places the sculptural form of an anthurium in sharp focus before the softly blurred profile of a female figure. The flower appears almost like an extravagant hat, while the relationship between its sweeping curves and the woman’s silhouette creates a refined dialogue between nature, fashion and the human form.

Part of Arbeit’s In and Out of Focus series, the photograph reflects the visual discipline he developed while working as a photographic retoucher for Irving Penn and as an assistant to Helmut Newton. Penn’s precision and Newton’s command of light and sensuality resonate throughout the image, while Arbeit transforms these influences into a distinct photographic language built around focus, form and suggestion.
